Mother Nature has been kind to us and has cooled the weather down to where it is bearable. The weather at Shasta Raceway Park in July 15th was only 105 +. I made about 50+ laps of practice on Friday at Shasta. On Saturday 8 BCRA Vintage midgets were there to be a part of the show. Perry and Paula Ashworth brought their newly acquired K.K. V8-60 for their first time out. The promoter George Wade was gracious and allowed Perry to be pushed to see if it would fire. Perry was pushed off and within 50 feet or less the V8-60 came to life and sounded great. I have no idea who was the most excited Paula or Perry.
John and Joe and Joe Jr. DeMartini fired their beautiful "Bayshore Garage Special" K.K. V8-60 for the first on track excursion. Both Perry and John were as excited as a kid in a candy store. Bob Wacker brought his newly completed K.K. Offy for their first time out. Bob did not have a driver so I volunteered to drive it and start it for the first time since it was finished. Unfortunately there were a few fuel leaks so I only did one lap and came in and shut it down. That was my first ride in an Offy WOW.
On July 22nd. The BCRA Vintage midgets were invited to be a part of the BCRA/USAC combo show at Madera Speedway. I have never experienced such hot weather in my life. It was 112 to 116 degrees all day according to the track score board. Due to the hot weather only six BCRA vintage midgets were there to enjoy the heat. Everything was so hot that you could not touch anything. I think I drank enough water to float a battleship that day. Several of us older folks had to take refuge in Frank and Kay’s R.V. And others in Scott’s R.V. and at midnight it was still over 90 degrees.
