Chris Rahe Roars to Victory at King’s Speedway

By Robert Haugh

Piloting the #3c, fast-timer Chris Rahe emerged victorious in the 30-lap DMS Race Products BCRA Midget feature at the speedy 3/8-mile King’s Speedway in Hanford on Saturday, August 4.

Rahe overtook David Prickett on lap 23, leading the final seven laps en route to claiming his first BCRA Midget feature victory. Rahe becomes the tenth different BCRA feature winner in as many races.

Following Rahe to the checkers were Prickett in the Neverlift Motorsports #15 Stealth/Van Dyne, 7-time BCRA champion “Ageless Wonder” Floyd Alvis aboard the “Green Beret” #18 Champion Automotive Stealth/Esslinger, 16-year-old BCRA points leader Justin Grant aboard the Dave and Wendy Thurston #17 Spike/Esslinger and Ryan Kaplan in the Ken Kaplan #21 Stealth/Mopar rounding out the Top Five.

Third-place BCRA pointsman David Prickett had his best BCRA Midget outing to date, leading several laps behind-the-wheel of the #15 Neverlift Motorsports Stealth/Van Dyne. Prickett, who lost his regular dirt engine at a recent race, campaigned the Van Dyne engine usually only campaigned in his pavement Midget.

Alvis surged from the rear of the field in claiming third place after gently rolling over entering Turn 2 on Lap 10.

Rounding out the lead lap finishers were Steve Roza aboard Bob Roza’s #20 Stealth/Esslinger in sixth and Rick Faeth aboard his #3 Stealth/Chevy V4 in seventh.

After starting outside the front row in the feature, Grant passed Alvis on the opening lap, stretching out to a wide lead early, leading the first 13 laps before rescinding his lead, pitting the #17 Thurston Spike/Esslinger while under caution for a flip by BCRA visitor Joey Fabozzi aboard the #84 on Lap 13. Car owner and crew chief Dave Thurston quickly repaired the damaged left front shock in time for Grant to return without losing a lap. Fabozzi’s crash is believed to have been caused by a broken left front shock. Fabozzi was uninjured.

With Grant temporarily exiting, Prickett took control of the top spot, vying to become the fifth first-time BCRA Midget feature winner of the season. Continuing to outpace Rahe and pursuers hugging the bottom groove, Prickett led through Lap 24 when Rahe catapulted around Prickett on the outer line en route to the win. Rahe had been delicately picking cars off on the high-groove all race, avoiding several tangle-ups.

After running in the Top five, two-time reigning BCRA champion John Sarale dropped out in his Sarale Farms #32 Stealth/Riolo-Chevy after breaking a left front shock, winding up in eighth in a field depleted by chassis and engine woes. Hanford’s Jared Little pitted at the halfway mark, returning later several laps down to score a ninth-place run aboard his #23 Stinger/Mopar with BCRA visitor Quinton Crye coming home tenth aboard the #15x Glenn Crye mount. Crye dropped out because of blowing oil out of his oilpan that later proved to have a hole in it.

19-year-old BCRA rookie Kevin Morris was running third behind Grant and Prickett prior to making heavy contact with the front stretch wall aboard father Del’s #17k Spike/Esslinger mount on Lap 13, ending his evening prematurely. Morris managed to avoid severe catastrophe, slowing the car and eluding overturning the car. Morris was uninjured.

Ralphie “The Racer” Cortez had a strong run going aboard the #31 Cortez/Walker Motorsports Stealth/Esslinger before dropping out with engine oiling problems, relegating him to his fourth dirt DNF of the year in as many races. Cortez had been running in the Top Seven up until he dropped out.

Sarale claimed Heat 1 over of Alvis, Cortez, Faeth and Grant.

Ryan Kaplan captured Heat 2 over Jimmy Voitel, Rahe, Morris, Prickett and Quinton Crye.

Rahe topped the clocks, catapulting around the slick 3/8-mile oval with a time of 16.040, just four hundredths from breaking into the 15-second bracket.

The 2007 DMS Race Products BCRA Midget series continues its season Saturday at John Padjen’s ¼-mile Placerville Speedway in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills on August 11. Prior to the evening’s racing, the Annual Jack London Bash Hall of Fame & Picnic will be held on the picnic grounds at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds, adjacent to the pit area.
