EUREKA, CA., MAY 20: Travis Berryhill enhanced his point lead, scoring his second consecutive feature win in Bay Cities Racing Association midget action, taking the feature over the 30-lap route at the Redwood Acres Raceway in California's great Northern Redwood Empire.
Starting seventh aboard his "Spirit of American Canyon" Stealth/Fontana, Berryhill took the lead on the seventh lap from pacesetter Ralph Cortez on the fast 3/8-mile paved oval.
Cortez, aboard his recently acquired Beast/Sesco Mopar, charged into the lead from the pole with Bill Lindsey, Glenn Carson and Gary Dickenson in pursuit. Berryhill wasted no time, climbing into sixth on the first lap, then commanding third on the second circuit, dropping Carson to fourth as David Prickett bested Dickenson for sixth.
Fast qualifier John Sarale edged his "Sarale Farms" Beast/Chevy into fifth by the third round as Berryhill displaced Lindsey for second.
On the fourth lap Prickett pitted his Stealth/VanDyne with a broken distributor cap. Carson, who had been physically ill all evening, managed to work the Bock Stealth/Esslinger past Lindsey as Sarale jumped into fourth.
Charging into turn-one on the seventh round Berryhill drove under Cortez to grab the lead as Sarale pressured Carson for third, making good his bid down the backstretch.
Berryhill began pulling away from the field as Sarale began reeling in Cortez. Moving high through the fourth turn Sarale nudged ahead of Cortez to take the number-two spot at the conclusion of the 15th circuit.
The pace was set for the remaining half of the race with Berryhill leading Sarale, Cortez, Carson, Eric Mostin, Dickenson, Cameron Beard and Lindsey.
As Berryhill took the checkered on the green-to-green race, the backstretch yellow light came on, apparently a common track procedure there. Seeing the caution light, Beard backed off and was nipped for fifth by Dickenson at the line. BCRA referee Tom Manning reversed the positions post-race.
The next BCRA midget race is set for the Lakeport Speedway June 3rd.
