CARSON CITY, NV., MAY 28: Third generation driver Michael Hubert III scored his first feature win of the season, taking the 50-lap Bay Cities Racing Association "Salute to Indy" event at the Champion Speedway in Carson City, Nevada.
Hubert drove the Judy Hubert Gaerte Chevy powered Beast to the win, taking the lead on the seventh lap to lead Robby Flock, Garratt Boyden and Thomas Meseraull across the finish line.
Boyden led off from the pole aboard the Gary Boyden Esslinger/Beast to pace the 18-car starting field. Hubert, from fourth, immediately pulled in behind the leader with visiting AMRA rookie of the year Lynsey Tilton in third over a charging Flock, aboard the Bob Rosen "Mr. Espresso Coffee" Esslinger/Beast.
Flock displaced the teenaged Tilton on the second round for third with Eric Mostin up to fifth over John Sarale and Scott Walker in the tightly-bunched pack.
Pete Davis and defending BCRA champion and point leader Thomas Meseraull worked their way up to seventh and eighth by the fifth circuit on the fast quarter-mile paved oval.
Entering turn-three on the seventh lap Hubert took the outside route around
Boyden. At the same time Flock dove under the leader as the top-runners
navigated the turn three-abreast. Boyden was forced to back off the throttle,
giving Hubert the opportunity to swoop down into the lead as Boyden held off
Flock. On the next lap Flock managed to out-duel Boyden for the number-two
spot as Meseraull moved by Davis with Gard now up to eighth.
On the tenth lap Davis brought out the caution flag as he limped to a stop at
the end of turn-two with mechanical problems.
Following the green flag, as the pack exited turn-four, Meseraull tucked in behind Mostin. Gard had no room and made contact, running up and over the Bill Ferrari Esslinger/Beast, resulting in an aerial spin and glancing blow off the front straight wall. Gard's Borghsani Gaerte Chevy/Beast received severe suspension damage. During the yellow flag period fast qualifier Ryan Kaplan retired.
Hubert continued his lead with Meseraull displacing Tilton for fourth on the 14th lap and Sarale's Chevy/Beast moving by the young female driver one lap later. Bobby Dalton displaced Tilton for sixth and she dropped one more position to Chris Schmelzle on the 24th circuit.
Scott Pierovich brought out the final caution flag on the 25th lap when his Wirth Mopar/Beast stalled entering the first turn.
Meseraull challenged Boyden to take over third as they exited the fourth turn on the 26th round. Sarale and Dalton continued in fifth and sixth with Schmelzle and Walker following.
Hubert managed to pull away from Flock at the exit of the turns to remain in control as Boyden fought to regain third form Meseraull. Tilton pitted on the 40th marker as the Meseraull/Boyden battle continued. Boyden made good his efforts on the 46th circuit to secure third. Two laps later Walker retired.
At the finish Hubert took the checkered flag over Flock, Boyden, Meseraull Sarale, Dalton, Schmelzle and Shannon McQueen on the leader's lap.
Ryan Kaplan established a new midget qualifying record at 12.18, erasing John
Stark's mark of 12.31.
Scott Pierovich was victorious in the special six-car, six-lap "Dash for Cash"
over Dalton and Kaplan.
Eddie Abrew took the first 10-lap heat race over Hubert and Boyden. Flock won
the second heat over Gard and Schmelzle.
BCRA's vintage division ran nine cars in demonstration races.
The BCRA midgets make their first of three appearances at the Lakeport
Speedway on June 4 then return to Santa Maria on June 11.
