Midget Rule Clarification
At the request of several BCRA car owners and drivers, the BCRA Board of Directors has reviewed the current Combo-Car and 12” Right-Rear wheel rule. The 12” Right-Rear Wheel rule has been in place since before 2000, and has always been intended to encourage car owners with older, and/or less powerful motors, to bring their cars out and race. The 12” Right-Rear Wheel rule was meant to give these under-powered cars a little better chance to compete.
By the mid-2000s, the pavement car was dominating and owners with older cars and less powerful motors, were abandoning pavement racing. By 2006, the pavement car numbers were dwindling to single digits, based primarily on the high cost of the cars and motors.
In 2007, the BCRA Board of Directors, in an attempt to encourage owners with older, under-powered cars to come out and compete, and especially compete on pavement, enacted the Combo-Car rule and allowed Combo-cars that ran both pavement and dirt races the right to use a 12” Right-Rear wheel. Again, allowing the use of a 12” right-rear wheel was seen as an incentive to try and increase car counts, especially at pavement tracks.
In 2010, the heart of the Combo-Car rule was cut from the Rules & Regulations and any car that measures 36” or less from the front of the fire-wall to the center of the rear axle, and is a left-hand steer car, was declared a Combo-Car and allowed to use the 12” Right-Rear wheel. Again, the numbers of the older cars with under-powered motors has fallen off sharply at pavement tracks, and the car counts have dwindled once again to single digit numbers.
The 2012 BCRA Board of Directors has carefully reviewed this situation and decided that the Combo-Car rule is not helping to increase car counts, especially on pavement, and, in effect, is actually reducing car counts on pavement. So, at the request of both BCRA members and promoters, the Combo-Car clause is being dropped from the 2012 BCRA Rules & Regulations, leaving the following clause defining which cars can use a 12” Right-Rear wheel. It is hoped by the BCRA Board of Directors, its members, and especially the pavement track promoters, that this change will encourage owners with older chassis and under-powered motors to once again bring their cars out to race.

27.) All midgets racing with BCRA will be allowed to use a maximum 10" wide right rear wheel, 13" in diameter. Exception: Midgets that utilize an OEM block (Pontiac, ECOTEC, any engine meeting the OEM spec in Section B – Sub-Section 4 on Page 15) or are 174 CID VW or 132 CID Cosworth may use a 12" wide right rear wheel. All three remaining wheels can only be a maximum of 8" wide and 13" in diameter.

BCRA Vintage Views - Madera 5/5/2012
Vukovich Classic
By June Wheeler-Ferreira
The news from BCRA Vintage Views, Madera May the 5th was the Vukovich Classic. Full night of open wheel racing with USAC/BCRA midgets, USAC /NMCA sprints, Super Modifieds, South West tour trucks and the mighty BCRA Vintage midgets.
The weather was great mid 70’s the crowd was fair could have been better and as always the racing was great. All the groups got warm ups and hot laps, but unfortunately the mains was cut short because of a 2 hour track repair job which was the aftermath of a wild ride that Mike Donaldson took down the front straight away in the competitive midget heat. The vintage guys got one short warm up on the track. Because of the time frame we were unable to run the heat and main, but the guys still had a good time in the pits visiting and kicking tires. Lots of notables came over to look at the cars. We were visited by Burt Foland , who gave Paul a little hand with his throttle always good to see him at the track. Also Tommy Astone Jr. was looking things over too.
Our Vintage director Tommy Belfiore inspected cars for safety so that help to past the time away. Unfortunately things happen at the track that can’t be helped and we are the first that have to set the night out. Remember guys, the promoters work real hard to put people in the stands and put on a good show and they don’t like it when they have to cut a group out and unfortunately that’s the vintage group. We have to remember that they let us run as an extra benefit for the fans and must realize that sometimes, we won’t make the show. Most of us stay busy working on our cars and watching the other racing events. We can’t go away mad if things go wrong. But you must realize that there is no guarantee that we will be able to run, it doesn’t happen to often, but it does happen. We will be going back to Madera on June the 9th and I’m sure if all goes well we’ll get plenty of track time, So lets keep this date in mind and get plenty of cars and put on a great exhibition for the fans.
The Vintage guys: Tommy & Sammy Belfiore #16 Edmunds Chevy II, Norm Gray and Brian # 30 Kurtis Ford V8-60, Harold & Nancy Allen, #04 Kurtis Ford V8-60, Don Strauch & Nephew #26 Kane Chevy II, Richard Walsh #8 Marmon-4, Doug Shanoian #17 Offy and Paul and June Ferreira #1 Edmunds Chevy II.
Richard Walsh did a static display with his Marmon-4 for Kenny Shepherd in front of the grandstands, what a beautiful car it was own and driven by his uncle Clay Walsh.
Remember guys we’re too old to be famous now, see you at Madera, June & Paul
