Scotty Farmer scores at Placerville Speedway
Seventeen BCRA/USAC Western States midgets were on hand Saturday night October 10th for “Prospector Pandemonium” at Placerville Speedway in a program that also featured the USAC West Coast sprint cars and the BCRA midget lites.
After a brief delay to further work in the track surface, the fourteenth car out to qualify, Shannon McQueen blazed around the ¼-mile oval in 13.032 seconds in her #7 Stanton powered machine to edge young Brody Fuson in his father’s Esslinger-powered car by just .009 of second to claim the evening’s fast time.
2015 BCRA champion Frankie Guerrini III in the Stanton-powered F & F Special wound up third with Scotty Farmer, the New Zealand native who most recently lived in Australia, fourth fastest in the jet black Esslinger-powered Six8 Racing entry and Alex Schutte rounded out the top five qualifiers in his Toyota powered midget.
USAC double-duty driver Dylan Ito captured the first heat race over Schutte, Ashlyn Rodriguez, McQueen, Guerrini, 2017 BCRA champion Maria Cofer, Jake Andreotti in the Pete Davis #00, Randi Pankrantz, and 2019 BCRA champion Robert Carson who battled engine problems all night and did not take the green flag.
Brody Fuson won the second heat race over Colton Raudman, with Farmer in third place ahead of Blake Bower. CJ Sarna finished fifth ahead of nine-time BCRA champion Floyd Alvis, Kyle Beilman and Jackson Dukes in Randy Wright’s #1X
The 30-lap feature started with a bang as the cars of Ito and Cofer spun to a stop in turn four on the first lap then as the yellow flag came out, Raudman got over McQueen’s right rear and flipped in turn one. McQueen, Ito and Cofer restarted at the tail of the field on the complete restart, but Raudman could not continue.
Alex Schutte jumped into the lead on the start with Farmer, Guerrini, Fuson and Bower in hot pursuit. On lap nine, in turn two, Guerrini got balked in lapped traffic, nearly spun and fell to seventh place. Schutte continued to lead until he got caught up in lapped traffic and spun to stop in turn two on lap 14. Alex’s misfortune handed the lead to Farmer, as the field saw another caution flag on lap 16 for Bower’s stopped machine which was pushed to the pit area.
When racing resumed, Guerrini, McQueen and Schutte steadily moved their way back through the field until the caution flag flew again on lap 25 for Andreotti’s stopped machine on the backstretch. Frankie had recovered to fourth place while Alex rode in sixth place just ahead of McQueen. The final five laps saw Fuson pass Sarna for second place while Farmer pulled away from the field to take the checkered flag in convincing fashion.
Brody Fuson wound up in second, with Sarna in third place as the night’s biggest mover after he started the feature in tenth place. Frankie Guerrini recovered to finish fourth ahead of McQueen in fifth place, another fine recovery after her first lap tangle.
Dylan Ito finished in sixth place ahead of Alex Schutte, Rodriguez, Pankrantz and Alvis the tenth place finisher. Among the non-finishers the order was Andreotti in eleventh, trailed by Cofer, Bower, Beilman, Dukes, Raudman and Carson who did not start the feature
Next on the schedule for the BCRA/USAC Western States midget competitors is the first round of the West Coast Stock Motorsports Car Hall of Fame Classic on Saturday October 17th at Rick Faeth’s Petaluma Speedway.
