NICHOLS WINS THIRD STRAIGHT “TOM MANNING MEMORIAL”

By – Mark Sublett

Stockton, CA……Chad Nichols overcame adversity to win his third straight “Tom Manning Memorial” Bay Cities Racing Association midget race held at the historic Stockton 99 Speedway Saturday night. Starting last due to mechanical problems in practice and posting no qualifying time in time trails, he steadily drove his Beast/Esslinger up in the non stop 25 lap main and passed leader Jesse Love coming off turn four on lap seventeen to take the win. Driving the Tres Van Dyne owned Beast/Van Dyne Love finished second in an impressive effort for the young rookie from Menlo Park on a track he had never seen before. Mark Maliepaard from Ripon finished third in his Beast/Esslinger after he battled with fourth place finisher David Goodwill from Napa who lead the first three circuits on the banked 1/4 mile paved oval. Defending BCRA Champion Maria Cofer from Macdoel finished a solid fifth in the Arata Bros. Spike/Chevy. Madera driver Cody Jessop finished sixth in his Champion/Ford Focus with Carson City veteran JR WIlliams seventh driving his Stealth/Fontana.

David Goodwill won the eight lap heat in his Beast/Mopar with Nichols second after a three wide duel with Maliepaard and Love who finished third and fourth. Cofer finished fifth with Jessop sixth followed by Williams in seventh. Also at the track were Floyd Alvis and Cody Gerhardt who had mechanical problems forcing them to scratch for the evening.

The night was in honor of Tom Manning who was loyal supporter of not only the BCRA but Northern California racing in general. He was a race car driver, mechanic, official and chief steward at several tracks and organizations over his many years working at the races. Chad Nichols has won all three Memorials run to date. Next race for the BCRA Midgets is July 7th at Madera Speedway.
