RIPON, CA. JANUARY 31: Chad Nichols and Brian Corso accepted the awards as champions in the Bay Cities Racing Association’s two midget divisions at the 75th Championship Award Banquet.
Nichols became the first midget driving champion to follow in the footsteps of his father, Ken Nichols who is the 1973 BCRA midget driving champion. Dad looked on with pride as his son accepted not only the driving accolades, but also that of the car owner, as well as the driver and car owner championships in the pavement category. Nichols placed seventh in the dirt track category which was won by Sean Dodenhoff.
Veteran midget lite chauffeur Brian Corso also emerged as both the driving and car owner champion in the 1200cc motorcycle engine powered midget lite division.
The top-ten owners and drivers from both divisions received beautiful plaques and point fund checks, with the two champions also receiving championship rings.
BCRA’s popular vintage division was well represented with members receiving plaques.
The extremely artistic plaques were designed and produced by Tim Grant, father of 2007 BCRA midget champion Justin Grant, who currently competes in sprint cars, primarily in the Midwest.
Among the other annual awards announced by MC Rick Faeth and presented by BCRA Board of Directors President Rick Holbrook, were: The Johnny Boyd Midget Rookie of the Year to Barry Pries Jr.; Midget Lite Rookie of the Year Logan Seavey. In the Johnny Baldwin Midget Most Improved Driver it was Michael Donaldson and the Tracy Taylor Most Improved in the midget lite division went to Steve Brown. The John & Gladys Soares Sr. Memorial Perseverance awards went to Matt Streeter in the midgets and Dakota Albright in the lites. Among the prestigious awards were the Lloyd Nygren Midget Sportsmanship Award, presented to official Tom Manning, and the Tom Boune Midget Lite Sportsmanship Award, which went to Rose Jorjorian.
BCRA closed out it’s 75 consecutive racing season with an upturn in car counts and aspiring new rookies, of which five in each of the divisions, midget and midget lite, received special rookie accommodations.
The outlook for the 2015 season is in high gear with a good selection of races for both division, including a return to Fernley, Nevada after several years for the midgets.
